Govt, opposition reach consensus on appointment of CEC, members: Senate body told.

ISLAMABAD -- Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs was told on Friday that the government and opposition had reached a consensus on the appointment of chief election commissioner (CEC) and two members from Balochistan and Sindh.

Senator Dr Sikandar Mandhro informed the committee that the deadlock between the government and opposition on the appointments' issue had been broken.

He was the member of the parliamentary committee on appointment of CEC and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Senator Waleed Iqbal said a bill was under consideration to refer the matter of appointment of CEC and members of the ECP to Supreme Court in case the government and opposition could not decide the names.

The senators were of the view that the parliamentary committee should make further rules to avoid the deadlock on the issue of appointments in future.

Election Commission Secretary Zafar Iqbal told the committee that electoral rolls had been displayed and the voters could include their names, change their voting location or make other objections by filling out different forms.

He said a voter awareness campaign had been running on print and electronic media.
