Govt files review petition in army chief's tenure extension.

ISLAMABAD -- The federal government on Thursday filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's verdict in extension of the army chief's service tenure case, pleading the court to form a larger bench to hear the case.

According to details, the government filed a petition in the court to review its verdict on army chief's tenure extension.

In the petition, the government has pleaded the court to form a larger bench to hear the case, and requested it to hold the proceedings in-camera.

The petition further states that the executive powers have been curtailed in this decision. Extension in tenure of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is the executive authority of the prime minister, saying that determining the term of the Army Chief is against the constitution.

The petition contended that the army is a security institution the domestic situation is linked to country's national security. The Supreme Court should review its brief verdict of November 28 and detailed verdict of December 16.

Federal Minister for Law Farogh Naseem said that the Supreme Court did not review several important constitutional points in its decision.

The Supreme Court had issued its detailed verdict on the extension of the chief of the army staff on December 16.

On November 28, the top court, in its short order, had allowed the federal government to grant a six-month extension to Chief of Army Staff , General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
