Former defence secretary calls for dialogue between institutions.

ISLAMABAD -- Former defence secretary retired Lt Gen Khalild Lodhi on Wednesday called for a commission to be formed to settle issues between institutions and move forward for the betterment of the country.

Speaking at the launch of former inspector general of police (IGP) Zulfiqar Cheema's book Straight Talk, he said dialogue is needed among all institutions to look into issues facing the country.

Other speakers at the launch also urged dialogue between the political, judicial and military leadership.

Former ambassador Abdul Basit, while praising the book and author, said that those who work with honesty are bound to face problems and the author is one of them, but he did not compromise.

Citing problems facing government servants, Mr Basit said that when he was posted in India as ambassador he was called Nawaz Sharif's man, and when he started working he was called Inter-Services Intelligence's man.

He added that Mr Cheema's writing about a new charter of Pakistan was the need of the hour. Shedding light on the book, he said the author not only identified maladies but suggested remedies to them as well.

Former National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that Mr Cheema was respected because he always resisted unlawful orders from rulers.

He cited the case of the NA-100 constituency, where Mr Cheema as a police officer did not allow any party to influence the election and also highlighted his refusal to arrest judges.
