KARACHI -- If on the one hand unplanned urbanisation has divested Third World countries (if such a classification exists) of their pristine visual charm, on the other hand a collective lack of interest on the part of their citizens in nature and its countless blessings has precipitated the process of erosion of natural resources. Who can question the beauty and efficacy of mangroves? And yet, how many of us think of them as an integral element of our landscapes and seascapes?

One must appreciate architect and photographer Tariq Alexander Qaiser's remarkable effort in putting up an exhibition at the Canvas Art Gallery titled The Edge of Delta, in which he has, through lovely images, video clips and insightful narration, highlighted maritime beauty as well as the issues related to our ecosystem. Anyone who has even a modicum of interest in art and nature, this show will enable them to realise how an artist's concern for the environment can translate into an aesthetic journey.

To elucidate, here's what Tariq has to say about all of this in his statement: 'These are our hidden forests -- forests that exist within the limits of 'our' city, Karachi. They are ancient, expansive, healthy, and are at risk...
