Farmers hit by hailstorm seek compensation.

JHANG -- The local farmers whose crops were destroyed by the hailstorm that lashed some areas in the district last week have demanded the Punjab government should announce a package to compensate them for their losses.

Talking to media persons here on Saturday, the provincial president of the Pakistan Kissan Board, Mr Safdar Saleem Noul, urged the chief minister, agriculture minister and revenue minister to immediately declare the affected parts of the district as calamity-hit areas and announce a relief package for the affected farmers, including deferment of agricultural loans, compensation for the damaged crops and a liberal policy for issuing further loans.

He expressed apprehension that if the government didn't accept the farmers' demand, the cultivation of the next wheat crop would be adversely affected in the district.

A hailstorm, followed by torrential rain, had played havoc with standing crops in some 50 villages of six qanongo circles of Jhang Tehsil.
