Fake fertiliser seized.

GUJRAT -- Agriculture department officials claim to have recovered 390 bags of fake fertiliser from a godown at Jheeranwali village of Kunjah tehsil, getting its owner arrested on Tuesday.

Official sources say that on a tip-off agriculture department Deputy Director Dr Irfanullah Warraich, heading a team, collected samples of single super phosphate fertilisers from a dealer's godown, that proved fake in laboratory tests.

At this, the team confiscated 390 bags of fertiliser from the dealer's godown.

Godown owner Imran Younis has also been booked and arrested by Kunjah police on the report of the deputy director.

The police confiscated the fertiliser bags for further legal proceedings against the suspect.

Deputy Commissioner Rizwan Qadeer has commended the team for taking action against the sale of fake fertiliser, saying operation against such elements would continue in the district.

Meanwhile, the local agricultural department has announced the winners of a competition for maximum wheat production in the district.

The department declared Muhammad Iqbal, a schoolteacher of Chakori Bhelowal village, as winner of the contest for producing 54.86 maund per acre wheat.

As per the Punjab government's policy, the winner was given a sum of Rs300,000 and a shield, whereas Ahsan Asghar of Makiana stood second for producing 54.28 maund per acre wheat and got Rs200,000 and Imtiaz Ahmed of Amra Kalan stood third for producing 53.76 maund per acre with a cash award of Rs100,000.

Gujrat DC gave the cash prizes and shields to the winners of the contest.
