Cost escalations feared over delayed projects.

CHITRAL -- Contractors have feared that the public works department will struggle to complete development work on time due to climatic conditions and thus, causing cost escalations.

A contractor working with public works and local governments told Dawn that construction didn't take place during the winter season, which lasted five months, while most of the projects were to be completed by June 30.He said usually, tenders for projects were called in Aug and Sept, while work orders were issued at the onset of the winter season.

'Most projects have June 30 deadline but codal complications crop up when work is not completed or a large chunk of funds remains unutilised,' he said.

The contractor said starting work in April, he completed hardly its 20 per cent, while the finance department released more than 50 per cent of the total cost depending on the volume and size of work that should be consumed by June 30.
