Concerted efforts urged to eradicate polio.

LAKKI MARWAT -- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Dr Kazim Niaz has expressed his concern over the high number of polio cases in Laklki Marwat and Bannu districts and underlined the need for launching concerted efforts by all stakeholders to eradicate the crippling disease.

Chairing a meeting at the DC office here at district headquarters complex Tajazai, he said that there was a need to convince the people, especially parents, on immunisation of their children against polio.

'Protecting children from poliovirus is our prime responsibility and the authorities concerned should ensure provision of essential knowledge to people about usefulness of the oral polio vaccine and hazardous effects of the disease on human health,' he maintained.

Provincial secretary education Nadim Aslam Chaudhry, Emergency Operation Centre for polio coordinator Abdul Basit, Bannu division commissioner Adil Sadiq, RPO Abdul Ghafoor Afridi and deputy commissioner Jehangir Azam Wazir also attended the meeting.

He also presided over a separate meeting in Bannu where prevalence of polio and other important matters came under discussion.

Earlier, Mr Wazir briefed him about the polio eradication initiative, issues in education, health and other sectors and uplift projects.

In Khar, the authorities said that they had enhanced security of polio teams in Bajaur tribal district following attack on a polio team in neighbouring Lower Dir district on Wednesday, which left two policemen martyred.
