Commissioner assumes charge as RMC administrator after LG law comes into effect.

RAWALPINDI -- After restoration of the Punjab Local Government Act 2019, Divisional Commissioner Noorul Amin Mengal on Monday assumed the charge of Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) administrator while Deputy Commissioner Tahir Farooq took over as the District Council administrator.

The local government law of 2019 was automatically restored after the Punjab Local Government Ordinance 2021 expired on June 8.

The commissioner on Monday took over as the RMC administrator to replace the deputy commissioner who was given the charge by the PTI-led Punjab government under the Punjab Local government Ordinance 2021.

No plan has been announced by the government about the next local government and the bureaucracy will continue running the affairs of the civic bodies.

In 2015, the local government elections were held on party basis for the first time in the history of the country. The PML-N emerged as the single largest party in the RMC and the District Council.

On May 5, 2019, the then PTI government suspended the local governments across the province.

However, after the tenure of the local government ended on Jan 1, 2022, the then chief minister, Sardar Usman Buzdar, issued a notification appointing deputy commissioners as administrators in place of mayors and the District Council chairmen across the province.
