CDA plans to increase fine on water wastage up to Rs. 25,000.

ISLAMABAD -- The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has planned to increase the fine for repeater offenders against water wastage up to Rs. 25,000, as part of a conservation plan to ensure judicious use of the resource during this summer season.

'The authority has noted that Islamabad usually faces a shortage of water with a large number of people engaged in wasteful activities, such as washing their cars and allowing water to overflow into the streets,' an official told reporter.

He said that although existing laws permit the civic agency to impose a maximum fine of Rs 5,000 on those found wasting water however this punishment has failed to yield satisfactory results in the past.

The official said the residents of posh areas of the federal capital easily pay the fine and continue to waste water, leading to shortages of this vital resource, adding that to combat this challenge, the authority has planned to increase the fine for repeat offenders.

He said that the CDA has already announced to take strict legal action against those involved in water wastage to ensure its judicious use as well as saving from the acute shortage.
