IT would come as a shock to most people that the spare parts they buy for their expensive cars are fake, re-used and inappropriate. The local automobile manufacturers have f ailed to establish any quality suppliers for spare parts, while there are no quality standards for spare parts.

Because of loose checks and zero local manuf acturing capacity, some companies have started creating fake products like air filters made from plastic, repainting used oil filters, repacking use d motor oil and repacking low quality products into high value brands to cater to the market demands.

It is estimated that a fake plastic air filter costs Rs100. It is sold to wholesaler for Rs200, who supplies it to shops for Rs400, while the shop sells to the vehicle owner for Rs800 with Rs200 given to the driver forchoosing the shop. This highlights the amount of margins available for these products and also the amount of tax hidden by the spare part dealers and shops.

Therefore, the government should issue regulations...
