Car snatchers kill policeman, injure three passersby.

ISLAMABAD -- A sub-inspector was killed while three passersby were injured during car snatching at gunpoint on Friday in Shams Colony police area.

Shams Colony SHO Inspector Asjad Altaf, when contacted, confirmed the killing of the SI apparently during a robbery at Police Lines Headquarters Mor.

The Police Lines also houses the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Waqaruddin Syed said the suspected robbers intercepted a car and forced its inmates out and drove away.

When a sub-inspector of the Islamabad Traffic Police tried to intercept them they opened fire on him.

As a result he and three other passersby suffered bullet injuries, the DIG said, adding that the injured were shifted to a local hospital where the SI was pronounced dead.

The car which was snatched was later found abandoned at Chungi No. 26, the SHO said, adding that the suspects escaped towards Rawalpindi.
