Call for end to political interference in police appointments, transfers.

KOHAT -- Speakers at a seminar on police reforms on Wednesday stressed the need for an end to political interference in postings, transfers and appointments of the police officials so they could deliver as true professionals.

They regretted that poor people were totally 'ignored' in the CSS examinations and only those with strong political backgrounds were inducted. They said trust of people could be restored in the police department by implementing the reforms in letter and spirit.

The speakers said adequate budget should be set aside for training of police personnel and speedy investigations process. They said sometimes police personnel sought monetary help from complainants for conducting investigation into a case. They said policemen were becoming mentally depressed and failed to give their best due to long duty hours, and called for setting an eight-hour duty schedule for the personnel. They also recommended an end to political interference and neglecting the honest people belonging to poor families in appointments.
