Book on Sikh shrines, gurdwaras launched.

LAHORE -- A book on Sikh architectural heritage titled, Architecture of Sikh Shrines and Gurdwaras in Pakistan, by Samia Karamat was launched at Adabi Baithak, Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjabi historian and researcher Iqbal Qaiser, who also contributed to the book by providing research material, said it was a long-awaited work. The book project, he said, was initiated on the wish of Institute of Art of Culture (IAC) Vice Chancellor Sajida Vandal.

'The book is first of its kind. There is no such written material available on the Sikh gurdwara architecture.'

Mr Qaiser said there were many such buildings belonging to the Sikhs where extensive research and work was needed. 'In Rawalpindi alone, there are many buildings that belonged to Sikh community.'

He also talked about historical aspects of Sikh architecture explored in the book.

Educationist Kalyan Singh said the book encompassed both historical and architectural aspects of Sikh architecture.

He said a gurdwara was like a community centre which was open to the followers of every religion for visits. He said the book had a great historical value due to valuable research work. The Sikh structures were well elaborated in the book, he added.
