Blasphemy accused gets bail on medical grounds.

MULTAN -- The Lahore High Court Multan Bench granted bail to an accused of blasphemy on the grounds of his mental condition.

Wajid Ali, a resident of Mailsi, filed a petition through his counsel Advocate Shahbaz Ali Khan Gurmani under section 466/471/475 of Criminal Procedure Code while stating that an FIR NO 264/14 was lodged against his father Shaikh Ghulam Akbar on May 5, 2014, with City Police Station Mailsi.

He stated that a few days prior to the registration of the FIR it had been alleged that his father uttered derogatory remarks against Islam and Quran.

The court stated that section 466 Cr.P.C envisages that during an inquiry or trial, if the court has a reason to believe that the accused is of unsound mind and consequently incapable of making his defence.

The fact of unsoundness of the mind of the accused shall be inquired into for this purpose the accused shall be allowed to be examined by the civil surgeon of the district or any other medical officer as the provincial government may direct and after the medical examination...
