BISP registering more people for free flour: DC.

LAHORE -- Lahore Deputy Commissioner Ms Rafia Haider says the regional offices of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) have been directed by the federal government to register all the deserving persons left unregistered with the scheme, so they could get free flour bags during Ramazan.

The DC claims that so far over 0.4 million 10kg bags have been distributed among the eligible people under the free flour scheme starting on March 19 last through the 38 designated points set up in five tehsils of the Lahore city district for the purpose.

'We are giving flour bags to only those who are registered as eligible in the BISP system. However, the BISP offices are also registering those who have been left out, within 48 hours, as directed by the federal government.

We are also monitoring performance of the BISP offices in this regard,' Ms Haider told Dawn on Friday.

'Since we have so far distributed 411,419 flour bags among the people, the process is underway smoothly as no issue was reported to us in this regard yet,' she says, adding that the number of the distribution points had been increased from 38 to 40 in Lahore.

The DC says the data shows that over 1.28 million people were registered with the BISP in Lahore alone. Besides, there are many others from the districts of Kasur, Nankana, Okara and Sheikhupura, who have been availing such schemes while they were in the provincial capital.

'That is why we have not imposed any restriction on those from other districts on getting free flour in Lahore,' the DC adds.
