BFT reduces cost of producing fish by almost half.

LAHORE -- Despite low input cost and higher returns, Biofloc Technology (BFT) is getting least attention in aquaculture for breeding fish in the country.

Though 7-8 year old environment friendly technology is popular in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and some other countries, it is relatively new in Pakistan and accounted for only one per cent of total fish production, said Saad Yousaf, a fish farmer successfully using the technique for the last couple of years. BFT requires usage of minimum resources like water, land and feed besides preserving nature by producing fish at less cost as compared to traditional techniques.

BFT improves water quality in aquaculture through balancing the amount of Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N), which help in producing proteinaceous feed in the water. This auto-generated feed helps fish to grow faster. Because of this technique, fish farming requires zero or minimum exchange of water. This technique helps in production of microorganisms and bacteria's to feed the fish species (as natural feed) and save cost on feeding them with artificially produced feed.

Saad Yousaf, owner of Lasani Organic Farms, said that BFT reduces the cost of producing fish by almost half...
