Anti-encroachment drive sparks protests in many Sindh towns.

LARKANA -- A large number of people who lived in houses on both banks of Rice Canal and its branches staged a sit-in in Larkana on Sunday in protest against imminent demolition of their dwellings on court orders while people, whose houses had been razed in Golarchi and Matli towns, continued their agitation.

The protesters led by leaders of recently formed Save Our Homes drive, Mohammad Mithal Junejo, Saleem Mirani and others marched on main roads of the city before converging outside the press club at Jinnahbagh.

The leaders said that they had been living in the areas now designated for clearance for many decades and their houses were all they had. If their homes were bulldozed they would become homeless, they feared.

Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, adviser to Sindh chief minister on universities and boards also joined the sit-in and told the protesters that PPP was against dismantling the houses of the poor and it had engaged a lawyer to fight the case in the court and file a review petition.

He said the administration had been restrained from demolishing the houses till the decision on the review petition came. 'We will protect the poor as PPP believes in providing shelter and not depriving people of their homes,' he said.
