Accessibility for special students will be enhanced: minister.

ISLAMABAD -- Minister for Federal Education Shafqat Mahmood on Thursday said the government would initiate a special programme for facilitating and enhancing accessibility of students with special abilities in educational institutions.

Speaking at a ceremony held to distribute electric wheelchairs among students at the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the minister said he was hopeful that all public sector educational institutions would be made inclusive and accessible for special children.

He urged the private sector universities to make alterations in their infrastructure to provide more opportunities to specially challenged students.

'We have yet to acquire more milestones as a uniform policy for disabled citizens is under consideration and will be implemented sooner. We need to play a leadership role and it is government's responsibility to facilitate special children in transforming their lives.'

Mr Mahmood distributed 42 electric wheelchairs among students from 14 public sector universities.

HEC Chairman Dr Tariq Banuri, Executive Director Dr Fateh Marri, consultant CPEC retired Lt Gen Mohammad Asghar, recipients of wheelchairs and their parents were present.

The ceremony was organised under Prime Minister's Electric Wheelchair Scheme for University Students.
