54 passengers test positive for Covid-19.

TAXILA -- A total of 54 people who recently travelled from the United Arab Emirates aboard special flights and were quarantined at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Taxila have tested positive for Covid-19.

According to a health department official, two flights carrying 240 passengers from various parts of the country landed in Islamabad, from where the passengers were brought to Taxila to betestedand quarantined.

Deputy District Officer Health Dr Sara Qadeer said that the results of 54 passengers came back positive and 176 were negative, while the samples of 10 people have been collected and sent for testing again because they have symptoms of Covid-19 but their results were negative.

She added that people who have tested negative for the disease will be allowed to return to their hometowns.

Three police officials are among eight more people who were diagnosed with Covid-19 in Attock on Tuesday, the highest number of cases reported in a single day since the outbreak began in Attock. The total number of cases in Attock has reached 59.

The police officials who have tested positive were stations at quarantine centres, which is where they likely contracted the disease.

Data released by the local administration said this is the highest number of people to be diagnosed with Covid-19 since the outbreak began on March 25, and 95pc of the cases are of local transmission.
