27 FIRs lodged against sellers of 'substandard' edible oil, SHC told.

KARACHI -- The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) on Monday informed the Sindh High Court that it had banned the sale of loose edible oil in 2018 and sought time to file a progress report about action being taken against criminals.

The authority also contended that it had conducted over 300 raids against loose, substandard and smuggled cooking oil since May 27, lodged 27 cases and sealed over 100 warehouses.

When a division bench headed by Justice Mohammad Junaid Ghaffar took up two petitions for hearing, the comments and report were filed on behalf of the SFA director general on a petition filed against the sale of loose, smuggled and substandard cooking oil.

The bench also issued notices to the SFA, Sindh advocate general and others till June 27 on the second petition filed by retailers of loose edible oil against the authority's powers to seal their warehouses.

The SFA in its comment admitted that the loose and smuggled oil was being sold in Karachi, saying its scientific panel meeting had banned such sale in September 2018.
