200 protesting teachers arrested.

ISLAMABAD -- About 200 volunteer teachers of Basic Education Community Schools Programme (BECS) were arrested from Jinnah Avenue where they were staging a sit-in, sources told Dawn.

During the operation dozens of protestors suffered minor injuries.

The operation was conducted early on Thursday morning in and around Embassy Chowk by well equipped police contingent including anti-riot unit, police officers said, adding first the area was cordoned off by the police.

The street lights of Jinnah Avenue and Ataturk Avenue along with adjacent roads were also switched off before the operation, they said.

After the arrest the teachers were shifted to Kohsar Sub-Division and different police stations, including Secretariat and Women.

They were crammed into the police vans in their slumber, without any discrimination. Maximum protesters were arrested, but dozens escaped.

In-charge Watch and Ward Wing of Kohsar Sub-Divisional Inspector Asjad Mehmood stated that about 200 protesters were arrested and later shifted to different police station.
